How to Check Your Neck for Thyroid Gland Lumps or Nodules

Thyroid disorders have been on the rise in recent years. However, most cases are treatable as long as they are properly diagnosed by a doctor who specializes in endocrine disorders.

A throat specialist in Sydney will ensure that the underlying causes of any symptoms that you are experiencing are diagnosed and that a suitable treatment plan is followed to alleviate these symptoms.

In some cases of thyroid disorders, a noticeable lump in the neck, also known as a goiter, occurs.

This lump or nodule is often benign, but can be cancerous in some instances. Whether benign or cancerous, it is essential to follow a proper treatment plan.

To check your neck for thyroid lumps or nodules, you will need to stand in front of a mirror and stretch your neck back. Swallow and look out for bulging in the neck below the Adam’s Apple and above the collar bone. You can also feel that area while swallowing to test for lumps or nodules.

Keep in mind that checking for any unusual enlargements in your neck is not the only sign of thyroid disorders.

There are many other symptoms and risk factors to look out for

For instance:

  • if you suffer from sudden onset of panic attacks
  • experience depression often
  • have gained or lost weight for no apparent reason
  • have cholesterol issues
  • chronic fatigue
  • diarrhoea or constipation for extended periods of time
  • menstrual irregularities
  • fertility problems
  • have noticed that your hair has become brittle and dry
  • your skin has become coarse and dry
  • have a family history of thyroid disorders

It is important to schedule an exam with a throat specialist for a professional diagnosis.

Regular check-ups with a thyroid specialist should be an essential part of your treatment plan if you do have any problems with your thyroid gland.
