The Dangers of Overactive Thyroid Symptoms

May 21, 2014 By @ThyroidClinic

overactive-thyroid-symptomsThe condition that causes overactive thyroid symptoms is known as hyperthyroidism. This condition often goes unrecognised. One of the reasons is that people may not pay attention to the signs that they have a problem with too many hormones. Also the opposite condition, hypothyroidism, gets a lot more attention.

The inability to lose weight that results from an underactive thyroid is a big focus in society today. It can make those with hyperthyroidism feel like it is a trivial condition. Hyperthyroidism is an important condition with medical consequences. Prompt diagnosis and treatment is needed.

About overactive thyroid symptoms

There is a lot more to the complications of having a thyroid in overdrive than being thin. The symptoms of this disease have many potentially serious complications if left untreated. One of the common signs is rapid heart rate. The strain on the heart muscle is substantial over time and puts patients at a greater risk for heart failure if it is ignored.

Dealing with overactive thyroid symptoms

Dealing with the signs of hyperthyroid disease on a daily basis carries a lot of emotional stress. The fatigue and the physical problems add to despair and depression sets in. Those feelings can be increased if the person dealing with this serious thyroid disease feels others belittle the situation.

The signs of too many thyroid hormones include changes in bowel movements. This can lead to irritable bowel syndrome and poor absorption of nutrition.

At its worst, the overactive thyroid symptoms can even be fatal. One of the most serious complications from this form of thyroid disease is thyrotoxic crisis. The incidence of thyrotoxic crisis is rare, but can happen when those who suffer from the illness do not seek medical attention.

The problems brought on by an overactive thyroid gland are very treatable when caught in a timely manner. The common signs can vary in severity, but lessen if treatment is started right away. Those signs include the above mentioned symptoms as well as sweating, intolerance to heat, dry or protruding eyes, hair loss, fever, swelling at the base of the neck, confusion, and difficulty breathing or swallowing. If you have any of the early signs of hyperthyroid condition, seek a doctor’s advice as quickly as possible. The biggest danger of all in dealing with overactive thyroid symptoms is not doing anything at all.

If you have concerns regarding overactive thyroid symptoms make an appointment to see our thyroid surgeon.
